Prepare Ahead for Successful Lambing

TheÌý2026Ìýscanning season is now well underwayÌýand reports have been mixed.ÌýThere have been manyÌývery successfulÌýscansÌýwithÌýhigh levelsÌýof multiples expectedÌý(puttingÌýadditionalÌýnutritional pressure on a flock pre-lambing). However, alsoÌýsomeÌýnot quite asÌýgood asÌýhoped with some reports of higher levels of barren ewes.ÌýScanning whatever the results give a time for reflection.ÌýHighÌýlevelsÌýof barren ewes can be caused by a variety of reasonsÌýpredominantly relatingÌýtoÌýthreeÌýkey factors:ÌýÌý
NutritionÌý
- Was body condition of ewesÌýoptimalÌýgoing into tupping?ÌýÌý
- Did nutritional supply remain consistent for 50 days pre and post tupping – this is essential for normal ovulation and to optimise embryo implantation.Ìý
- Was the trace element status of ewes correct throughoutÌýtheÌýtuppingÌýperiod?ÌýÌý
HealthÌý
- Are there any underlying health challenges in the flock that may have led to infertility or early embryo loss – MV,Ìýborders,Ìýtoxoplasmosis, high worm burden, fluke?ÌýÌý
GeneticsÌýÌý
- Some breeds are naturally lower in prolificacy compared to others.ÌýÌý
- Prolificacy of ewesÌýlambsÌýcan also beÌýimpactedÌýbyÌýtheirÌýdamsÌýnutritional status during pregnancy.ÌýÌý
- Were all hoggs/ gimmers fertile to begin with?ÌýÌý
No matter what theÌýresults, thoughtsÌýafter scanning will turn to getting prepared for the upcoming lambing season and how we can optimise the number of lambs scanned thatÌýthenÌýmake it through to weaning.ÌýAÌýgood nutrition plan is essentialÌýin this.ÌýÌý
AÌýewe’sÌýrequirements for energy and protein will increase exponentially as the ewe approachesÌýher due date and into lactation.ÌýRequirementsÌýfor energy in a twin bearing ewe will be equivalent to a grown man runningÌýalmost aÌýmarathon a day in the last week of pregnancy rising to running an ultra-marathon a dayÌýin lactation!ÌýÌý
Long fibreÌýsuch as grass, silage or hay will make upÌýmost ofÌýanyÌýpre-lambingÌýdiet, knowing the nutritional supply andÌýavailabilityÌýof thisÌý(especially if relying onÌýgrazing alone) is vital to ensure the ration in sufficiently balanced toÌýmanage lamb growth, colostrumÌý/ milkÌýproduction and ewe condition.Ìý
Energy supply in silage can typically range between 9.0 – 12.1 MJ/kg DM and protein between 5 – 20% with hay also seeing an energy range between 8 – 10 MJ/kg DM and protein between 5 – 11%.If not already done, now is the time to consider analysis to ensure any supplemental feed best compliments forage available, this can also dramatically impact input costs to the flock also. Balance really is the key to best managing the nutritional needs of ewes during the most demanding period in the production cycle. Ìý
If in any doubtÌýof nutritional sufficiency as we nearÌýthe flocks due to date metabolic blood testing by theÌýfarmÌývet is a useful tool,ÌýgivingÌýassurance thatÌýewes have sufficient energy, protein and minerals pre-lambingÌýand can also allow some small changes to be made before we reach lambing if necessary.ÌýMetabolic tests are typically carried out aroundÌýfourÌýweeks preÌýlambing involvingÌýa representative sampleÌýfromÌýsixÌýewes in each management group.ÌýFor accuracy it is essentialÌýthat ewes have been on a consistent diet forÌýtwo to threeÌýweeks pre sampling andÌýare blood sampled either before concentrate feedingÌýor three to four hoursÌýpost feeding.Ìý
