Meet the Consultant - Scott Murdoch
I鈥檓 Scott and I have been working for SAC听Consulting听for just over a year now as an Agricultural Consultant听based听in Stirling. I grew up in a village near Biggar, South Lanarkshire听and always had an interest in farming and ambition to work in the agricultural industry听This led me to spending my summer holidays on my grandparents鈥� farm, before getting my first job on a local dairy farm.听听
Early mornings and dirty jobs weren鈥檛 enough to put me off and I quickly enrolled into a HND course at Oatridge after leaving school. After graduating in 2015, I decided the world was听bigger听than South Lanarkshire and off I went听to Cornwall. Here I worked听on a recently converted 300 cow grazing听dairy, who milked their听cows only once a day and produced ice cream.听This听sparked听a particular interest in dairying听as well as听grass听and听forage management.听
I was then given the opportunity to move to the Southern Hemisphere, where I continued to milk cows听as well as take on听seasonal work听including combining,听lambing听outdoors,听and听outwintering on a large scale. One of the farms I worked on grazed 1000 dairy cows on kale and fodder beet over the winter听months,听from听which听I have generated听a real interest in winter forage crops.听My time in New Zealand听also听increased听my knowledge of grass听management,听and it has left me convinced it is the best driver for profitability.听I have also spent time in Canada, where听the climate couldn鈥檛 have been any different听to听that of听back home.听Summers peaked at 40 degrees, winters at -40 degrees and the fields were literally a mile long.听From my time in Canada,听I learned all about conserving moisture through management practices like direct drilling and stripper headers.听
After my听four听years in听Canada,听I returned to the听UK where I worked on a听beef finishing听unit,听I realised that听after over a decade听working on various farms, gaining experience of many different farming practices听it was time to听move onto the next step of my agricultural career.听My time on farm had left me with a real passion for dairying, soil management听as well as anything forage related,听consulting听felt听like a natural听step听where I could apply my knowledge and skillset听learnt on farm.听听
Since joining听SAC Consulting听in December 2024, I have supported clients across a wide range of work, including听carbon auditing,听business planning, IACS submissions听all听alongside responding to the varied day to day queries that come听from clients.听As part of my role听within the听Stirling听team, I am听responsible for听livestock听rationing.听I find rationing and nutrition associated work听satisfying听and enjoy finding the right balance of听feed听availability听on farm,听optimising output,听and听ensuring the ration remains cost effective.听I also like to access the use of alternates,听ultimately,听it鈥檚 about tailoring the听animal听and client needs to ensure the best outcome.听听
I have recently become FACTS qualified, which now enables me to advise听on best听practice in fertiliser use and plant nutrient management, and听undertake听effective nutrient management advice听and budgeting. It鈥檚 been a busy and varied start to my consulting听career,听and I鈥檓听excited听to see what lies ahead.听
