Fertiliser Considerations for This Year’s Silage Ground

Spring is here, and althoughÌýmany of you will still beÌýfeeding winter rations, now is the time to start thinking about this year’s silage crop as the days stretch and soils get warmer. Fertiliser prices have until recently beenÌýstable, however as fertiliser volatility returns, it is important toÌýplan.ÌýÌý
BeforeÌýapplying any product to the grass there are a fewÌýimportant factorsÌýto consider,ÌýtoÌýensure that the grass will get theÌýbest utilisation of the product applied.ÌýKnowingÌýthe soil’sÌýpH is essential for achievingÌýoptimalÌýyield and qualityÌýfor any crop grown in the soil.ÌýOptimum soil pH varies slightly depending on soil type andÌýcropping systemÌýforÌýyoung grass destined for cuttingÌýgrown in a mineral soilÌýyouÌýshould aim for a pH ofÌýaroundÌý6.2.ÌýIt is advisable to have aÌýsoil sampling plan in place, sampling all fieldsÌýroutinely every five years toÌýmonitorÌýthe soils pH,ÌýphosphateÌýand potash levels. ThisÌýwill help to develop a fertiliser planÌýsuitableÌýforÌýsilageÌýcrops.ÌýÌý
Nitrogen is the first nutrient that comes to mindÌýfor manyÌýwhen thinkingÌýabout fertiliserÌýapplication,Ìýapplying it at the correct rate will ensure the best optimisation from the grass. ForÌýa firstÌýcutÌýsilageÌýcrop it is recommended to applyÌý120kgÌýN/haÌýappliedÌýeightÌýweeks before targeted cutting date. Higher rates and delayed application can result in the risk of nitrate N in the grass and poor silage fermentation.ÌýApplications forÌýsubsequentÌýcuts of silage should be made as soon as possible after theÌýpreviousÌýcutÌýat 90kgÌýN/ha and 70kgÌýN/ha for a third cut.ÌýÌý
It is also important to consider sward type when applying nitrogen.ÌýIf applying toÌýswards with a highÌýcloverÌýpercentage of cloverÌýcare should be takenÌýwith nitrogen quantity. Clovers are nitrogen fixing crops so naturally help to build nitrogen levels, they are alsoÌýsensitive to nitrogen and overapplication can lead to other grasses shading the clover reducing the percentage within the sward.ÌýRed clover hasÌývery lowÌýrequirements for supplementary nitrogen,ÌýifÌýthe grass appears nitrogen deficient a low rate of around 50kg N/ha could be considered but should be taken with caution.ÌýIf you have queries relating to nitrogen application andÌýclover,Ìýspeak to your consultant for advice.ÌýAll fertiliser advice should come from a FACTS accredited consultant or agronomist.ÌýÌý
Phosphate (P) and PotashÌý(K)Ìýlevels within the soilÌýcan alsoÌýbeÌýmonitoredÌýthrough soil analysis. This helpsÌýtoÌýunderstand the PÌýandÌýK status and where applicationsÌýmay or may not beÌýrequired.ÌýPhosphate isÌýparticularlyÌýimportantÌýfor grass establishment;ÌýP aids the development of theÌýplant’sÌýrootsÌýand the early tilleringÌýof the grass.ÌýItÌýis particularly important in young grasses as their root systems are not fully developed.ÌýAn exampleÌýtop-up rate of phosphate onÌýmoderate soils would be between 15ÌýandÌý20kg P/ha, this wouldÌýmaintainÌýa moderate level, however tailoredÌýfertiliser applications should be applied depending on soil analysis.ÌýÌý
AfterÌýnitrogen,ÌýpotashÌýis the second most important nutrientÌýfor grassÌýandÌýmaintainingÌýM- status is a sign of good grassland management. Offtake levels of potash in grassland can be considerable (180 to 330kg K2O/ha fromÌýtwo or threeÌýcut systems) and light or sandy soils can quickly be depleted of potash reserves. Typically, first cut silage rates should be 60 -Ìý90 kg K2O/ha and 50-60kg K2O/ha for second cuts. Exact rates will vary depending on soil status, nitrogen applicationÌýrateÌýandÌýanticipatedÌýgrass yield. Where required potash requirements are over 90kg/ha forÌýfirstÌýany surplus over the 90kg should be applied later in the season to avoid luxury uptake.ÌýÌýÌý
N PÌýandÌýK are theÌýthreeÌýcompoundsÌýmost often considered for silageÌýfertiliser applications, however in a silage cutting situationsÌýit is importantÌýto consider sulphur applications.ÌýThe grass cannot use the nitrogen applied to the best of its ability without adequate sulphur levels in the soil.ÌýJust like when considering the rates and requirements of N, PÌýandÌýKÌýfor the soil, it is important to understand the soil type and its conditionÌýbeforeÌýmaking a decision. SandyÌýandÌýshallow soilsÌýgenerally wouldÌýsee the greatest deficiencies, along with this fields cut intensively for silage and receivingÌýlarge doses of nitrogen are at risk.ÌýItÌýis important to look at the soil analysis ofÌýthe silage fields and consult with the farm’s FACTS advisor on selecting a product withÌýthe correct sulphur content to best utilise the nitrogen being applied.ÌýÌý
