Making a success of succession
Having early and honest conversations with family is vital in the farm succession process.
This is according to Heather Wildman, who will this month take part in a special webinar for the Scottish Government鈥檚 , which is delivered by experts from SAC Consulting.
The managing director of Saviour Associates will guide participants through the succession journey, from who to involve in initial discussions to providing tips to keeping family members happy in what can be a daunting and complex process.
Heather said: 鈥淔or many people, knowing and talking openly about their hopes, dreams, fears and ideas can be daunting, or even terrifying. So, rather than being open and being honest within our families and businesses we hold back, bottle things up and just hope for the best.
鈥淔or many, this does come true but for others there can be a build-up of frustration, resentment which can then can lead to a blow-up and fall out or depression.
鈥淲hen families start the conversation before there are health, money or other tensions we can see rationally and see things from other people鈥檚 perspectives. This opens up doors and opportunities. Plans can be made to accommodate and adapt and people have time to adjust.鈥
Kirsten Williams from SAC Consulting, part of Scotland鈥檚 Rural College, said: 鈥淣obody really knows what the future holds, particularly in these uncertain times, but there are many things we can do to plan ahead. Understanding succession and knowing where to start discussions is often a stumbling point for many farmers. This webinar will address this, with the assistance of an expert to guide people through these issues, encouraging people to start the discussions.鈥
